With the constant rise in petrol prices, people are starting to feel the pressure and trying to get as much out of their tanks as possible. These frosty mornings do not help when you are now having to burn fuel just to defrost your windows and see clearly out of them.
We have a few tips and tricks which will help you save a few bucks here and there. Keeping your car indoors, such as in a garage, is the best and easiest way of conserving your precious fuel. By doing this, you can simply get in and start driving almost immediately, without needing to defrost your windows.
- Always ensure that your tyres are on the correct air pressure. Avoid running your tyres too flat, as having flat tyres will decrease your fuel efficiency. It is best to try and check your tyre pressure at least once a month to avoid unnecessary use of fuel.
- Another useful tip is to always try and slowly build up your speed when driving. The more you accelerate, the more fuel you use, so it is better to slowly increase your speed rather than using harsh acceleration. A more uncommon tip is to always replace your engine’s air filter, as an old or blocked air filter can lead to higher fuel use. This is a quick and easy change, so it is most definitely worth the check.
Lastly, weight plays a huge role in the amount of fuel your car uses. Removing unnecessary weight from your car, such as roof racks, will significantly help in preserving your fuel. The lighter your car, the better. Many people even remove their spare tyre from their boot – as these can be quite hefty – and only place it back in when they are headed on longer road trips.
