There will always be reckless drivers; unfortunately, we need to know how to drive around them to ensure that we stay safe on the roads.
The most important point to remember in these situations is to always keep as much distance between you and the other car as possible. If they are driving in front of you, always leave enough space for sudden braking and stay alert and aware of what they are doing, anticipating sudden changes. Try to match their speed and do not attempt to block them off.
There are multiple ways you can protect yourself and your passengers from these reckless drivers. As previously mentioned, try to keep as much distance between you and them, which could be by changing lanes to move further away. If you can tell that this driver is a danger to the lives of others on the roads, call the police and inform them of the driver. Try to get their registration number, car model, and colour to help the police identify and track down the driver at fault.
If the car happens to have a “Rate My Driving” sticker with a phone number, you should phone it and report the bad driving to the company or the owner, as they need to know this information to prevent it from happening in the future, as well as to be able to identify their driver and issue a warning or some sort of consequence.
If the driver is approaching you quickly from behind, instead of trying to match their speed rather move over and allow them to safely pass you, especially if they have been intentionally tailgating you. You do not want to risk a collision or altercation. Avoid engaging with the driver if they are driving dangerously, in the case that they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, this could lead to irrational responses and reactions on their behalf.
Always avoid engaging with these drivers, as you do not want to escalate the situation in any way. You should always prioritize your safety and the safety of your passengers above and beyond everything else.
